They Make Book Ads This Big?? Since When???

Your eyes do not deceive you. You are seeing a giant ad for a book. A giant ad for a book in Times Square, no less. Call me provincial but we don't get giant ads for books in Canada so this was rather exciting for me. Even Margaret Atwood won't be getting her mug in Dundas Square for The Year of the Flood (nor should anyone want to).

The fact remains, books just don't make a heck of a lot of money in Canada. There's not enough people to buy them. But in the US, a few books make a few people very, very rich. And while that may not be fair or right or whatever, the idea of books making money gets me all hot and bothered.

I guess I've gotten past the point of thinking that Susie-What's-Her-Toes with the short stories and the sharp-as-nails turns of phrase should make a lot of dough. Because most people don't have the patience for craft. Fine. Just keep printing books. Keep publicizing books. Keep people reading books. And those who want a little more OOF to their story will find it, rest assured.

Hmm, makes me wonder why such a 'big name author' needs such big ads.....
