A Top 10 Book List Straight From the Jaws of Hell

A large prize to who ever guesses what's wrong with this list:
  1. ATLAS SHRUGGED by Ayn Rand
  2. THE FOUNTAINHEAD by Ayn Rand
  3. BATTLEFIELD EARTH by L. Ron Hubbard
  4. THE LORD OF THE RINGS by J.R.R. Tolkien
  5. TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD by Harper Lee
  6. 1984 by George Orwell
  7. ANTHEM by Ayn Rand
  8. WE THE LIVING by Ayn Rand
  9. MISSION EARTH by L. Ron Hubbard
  10. FEAR by L. Ron Hubbard
Oh you're getting warm!

This piece of brilliance is courtesy of The Modern Library. They polled readers to compile a list of the 100 best novels.

The Modern Library is owned by Random House and they print classics, or as they put it, "treasured classics, volumes of essential writings, major translations of great works from around the globe and rediscoveries of keen literary and historical merit."

I can see at least three works in this list that don't fit that bill.

Every time I look at this list I get a little more creeped out. Or maybe it's just John Travolta's face that's scaring me.

Thats just depressing. After looking at both the board and readers lists it's shocking how many contemporary authors made the readers list. I've got no problem with Stephen King or Laurell K Hamilton, but seeing them on there was weird (o.O)

Hahah I just discovered your blog it's pretty good.

Battlefield Earth is clearly a literary classic that should be taught in schools throughout the world. Ron L. Hubbard = amazing. (Sarcasm)

Hey James. Thanks for the props. I think I am going to have to read Hubbard eventually, just so I can understand the beast.
Nice blog, yourself.
